Today was my last day at SMA Photography and as a parting gift Stacey Adams gave me Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. As I read through chapter one, "Courage", I found myself laughing as Gilbert's words brought back memories. Specifically, my memory of trying to get my first photography internship.
During the summer before my junior year of high school my mom told me I needed to go get an internship for the summer. I flipped. There was no way I could call, email, and drop off resumes to studios around Albuquerque. I was so scared. Scared enough in fact that I broke down crying when my mom made me sit down and look up potential studios. As Gilbert would say, I let Fear take the wheel.
Fortunately for me, as the experience I gained at Kyle Zimmerman Photography was priceless, I decided that Fear was going to have to take a back seat. I quit my crying, told myself that an internship would do me a world of good, and picked up the phone. To my relief, I mostly reached answering machines. After waiting and waiting, I received one call back. ONLY ONE. And that lucky winner was Kyle Zimmerman Photography. I went in with a portfolio and was hired immediately. The internship was unpaid but I feel richer because of it.
Elizabeth Gilbert would say that my experience at Kyle Zimmerman Photography was "creative living." And Id have to agree. After I managed to concur my fear, my whole life changed. The following summer I went to Spain and this summer I managed to get not one but two internships!! Granted that second one didn't start until three weeks ago, but still.
I feel that the memories and experience I have gained with Stacey over the summer definitely fall under the "creative living" category. Even though we only saw each other 2-3 times a week, I feel that I have learned just as much with Stacey as I did with Kyle, Kate, and Jerry at Kyle Zimmerman Photography. Each studio had a unique style and both were inspiring. I strive to someday become as great as they are in their abilities. And I can't wait for the day when I have interns of my own to train and mentor.
So thank you Stacey, for all the wonderful time we spent together this summer and for Big Magic. I will cherish all of the memories I have and experience I have gained with you forever.
I can't wait to work with you again!
